A Week in My Life as a Physiology Student
Hello there!
Welcome back to my blog!
If you’re new here, my name is Godswill
A fourth-year medical college student in the Faculty of Basic Medicine, Department of Human Physiology, University of Calabar. This week, I had an incredible experience attending a zonal conference at Port Harcourt Nigeria, and I’m excited to share the highlights with you.
Day 1: The Journey Begins
On Monday 9th December 2024, I embarked on a road trip to Port Harcourt for a zonal conference themed “Physiology in the Modern Era: Challenges and Opportunities.” Representing my department felt like a big deal, and I was thrilled to travel alongside delegates from my PSA.
We left Calabar at noon and arrived in Port Harcourt around 7:30 PM. The journey was long but exciting, and the city’s vibrant energy was captivating. Arriving at the University of Port Harcourt (Uniport), I couldn’t help but admire its beautiful campus. Though the evening came with some unexpected drama, I’ll keep that story for another day!
Day 2: Fitness and Football
The second day started bright and early with a workout session at the Exercise Physiology Lab in the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, Uniport. The Fitness Center was well-equipped with treadmills, exercise machines, and everything a physiology enthusiast could hope for. We did some cardio workouts, measured our heart rates, and engaged in activities to strengthen our muscles—it was an energizing way to start the day!
In the evening, we witnessed an eventful football match between Rivers State University and Uniport. The game ended in a 2-2 draw, leaving the crowd buzzing with excitement. Dinner that night was equally memorable—we enjoyed swallow(Fufu) with delicious egusi soup. The hospitality at Uniport made the experience even more special.
Day 3: Conference Highlights
The third day was packed with insightful sessions. Initially, the conference was rumored to be canceled, but it went ahead, and I’m so glad it did! We had lectures from esteemed professors and professionals who spoke about navigating the field of physiology beyond the classroom and research labs.
From exploring clinical applications to entrepreneurial opportunities, the speakers inspired us to think bigger about our potential as physiologists. One major takeaway was understanding the versatility of physiology in various fields of life.
To top it off, I was honored with an award of participation alongside other delegates from different schools. We wrapped up the day with a photo session with the event’s coordinator, senator Comrade Agala Glory, and other amazing people I met throughout the conference.

Shoutouts! 🙌
I can’t talk about this experience without acknowledging some incredible people I met. Shoutout to Jay Justice, Dazzla, Daniel, Ferdinad, Bright, Ella, Deborah, Hector godsgift, Dr ameh, the Uniport SPAN President, all Uniport SPANites, NDU SPANites and RSU SPANites. It was such a pleasure connecting with you all!
I want to use this opportunity to specially thank my president; Comrade Agbor prince Ewor for his generosity, he's an amazing person.
Day 4: The Long Journey Home
Thursday morning, it was time to head back to Calabar, before we Left uniport the Span national president had a brief meeting with the executives and we took some pictures with him.
Delays in getting passengers on the bus meant we didn’t leave Port Harcourt until 5 PM. The journey was challenging—I arrived in Calabar around 5 AM on Friday, exhausted but grateful.
Friday: Back to Reality
Despite the fatigue, I went to school on Friday to catch up with my friends and spend time in the library. I’ve been diving deep into studying diabetes mellitus a topic in Environmental Physiology, and my passion for understanding this topic keeps growing.
I immersed myself in studying diabetes
I love learning about the clinical aspects, especially the different types and their presentations. From Type 1 Diabetes, which involves insulin therapy, to Type 2, also known as Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of how they manifest.
I explored Pre-Diabetes, Gestational Diabetes, and complications like heart failure.
Understanding the etiologies and the systemic impacts of diabetes makes me appreciate the complexity of this condition and the need for better management strategies, especially in clinical settings.
Saturday: Medical Outreach
Saturday was a highlight of my week! I had the privilege of co-organizing a medical outreach hosted by Todlog, led by my good friend Precious Osang. It was a fantastic event, and I was actively involved in making it a success.
During the outreach, I helped with vital signs checks, including blood pressure and pulse rate measurements. I even took the opportunity to check my Hepatitis B and C status, which thankfully came back negative.
One memorable case was a hypertensive patient with a reading of 200/100 mmHg. It was alarming, but we quickly referred the patient to the clinic for proper consultation and treatment. I also encountered several pediatric patients, which deepened my appreciation for providing accessible healthcare to vulnerable populations.
Being part of this outreach reminded me why I love medical science—it’s about making a difference, no matter how small.
Wrapping Up My Week
This week has been truly fulfilling. From representing my department at a zonal conference to learning more about diabetes and contributing to a medical outreach, I’m grateful for the experiences and the amazing people I met along the way.
2024 has been amazing so far, and I’m excited for what lies ahead. Thank you for reading, and I hope you’re inspired by my week!
