THE SIX (6) MOST DIFFICULT COURSES IN MEDICAL SCHOOL
We all have different experiences with the various courses and subjects offered in med school while some medical students consider some medical school courses to be more difficult, some tend to find same courses to be easier to comprehend.
So we cannot really come to a conclusion with regard to the most difficult course in med school. However based on some popular opinions and personal survey, I realized that medical students generally find some courses to be more difficult than the other, this does not necessarily mean that these other courses are walkover
These 6(six) courses listed below are just considered to be more difficult compared to others.
The six most difficult courses in med school
This list is not just based on how difficult it is for students to understand,but also based on difficulty level of the professional exams in these courses and clinical Rotations.
To make things fair the hardest course/subject in med school will be classified based on various classes they're offered; three (3) from preclinical phase and three (3) from clinical phase…
LIST OF HARDEST COURSES/SUBJECTS IN MEDICAL SCHOOL FROM PRECLINICAL PHASE:
•MEDICAL BIOCHEMISTRY
•HUMAN ANATOMY
•PHARMACOLOGY
Most medical, basic medical and health science students, when they first heard of Medical biochemistry (mbcm) must have thought that it would be similar to the organic chemistry they learnt in highschool but ended up disappointed by the numerous biochemical pathways which they had to memorize. According to recent findings, most med students preparing for USMLE step 1 agree that mbcm(medical biochemistry) is one of the most difficult class in med school.
2.HUMAN ANATOMY:
Anatomy is the first terror most students in college of Medicine/health sciences encounter coupled with it's Sub branches
*EMBRYOLOGY
* HISTOLOGY
* GROSS ANATOMY
* NEUROANATOMY
Differentiating medial from lateral, proximal from distal, superior from inferior,magnis from minimus, All these make fresh medical college students give up early on the course not to talk of neuroanatomy.
But is anatomy the hardest class in med school?
No! Most med college students initially have a hard time with anatomy due to lack of proper orientation, but with time and best study materials,they come to even love anatomy more than other courses.
3. PHARMACOLOGY :
Hmmm, pharmacology, many med students voted pharmacology as the hardest course in med school well, the reason is obvious. The volume of drug names, different classes of drugs to cram coupled with their mechanism of action,uses and side effects.
CLINICAL PHASE OF HARDEST COURSES IN MED SCHOOL.
PEDIATRICS
NEUROLOGY
NEUROSURGERY
4.PEDIATRICS:
The most annoying part in pediatrics is that you need to relearn most of the dosages of medication you have already known in adult medicine and the clerking is a nightmare on it's own..
Apart from all these pediatrics is a very sweet course especially if you're very good with children.
5. NEUROLOGY:
I don't know if this one is a personal bias, I generally find courses that have to deal with the brain a little off.
Neurology was part of the reasons I love medicine, when it comes to study of the structure, functions, dysfunction and treatment of diseases affecting different parts of the nervous system I usually have a hard time remembering them.
6. NEUROSURGERY :
Neurosurgery is not particularly hard once you have a good foundation in neuroanatomy. Neurosurgery is listed as one of the hardest courses in med school because long hours during surgery rotations and long hours during ward rounds. You must be really strong and resilient if after during neurosurgery rotations you still consider it as an option for specialization.
